High Pressure Tanning Beds

High pressure tanning is a modern tanning technology. High pressure tanning beds provide the ultimate tanning experience for all skin types. High pressure tanning beds produce ultraviolet 'A' which is the main tanning light ray. High pressure tanning beds do not utilize the harmful UVB rays. Most high pressure tanning beds have ultraviolet filtering system, which blocks UVB rays almost totally.

Instead of the phosphor coated tube lamps, high pressure tanning beds use ultraviolet light quartz lamps attached behind expensive filter glass. These allow only a specific wavelength of ultraviolet rays to pass through the tanner. The gases in the quartz lamp are a little bit above atmospheric pressure, while the gases in the tanning tubes of conventional tanning beds are below atmospheric pressure. A second filtering system of the high pressure tanning beds removes a great amount of the infrared spectrum.

Another major feature that makes high pressure tanning beds more attractive is the lesser amount of time required to establish and maintain a good base tan.

Usually high pressure tanning beds take only 3 to 5 sessions for establishing a base tan. If you are using a high pressure tanning bed, there is no need of tanning twice a week.

High Pressure Beds vs. Low Pressure Tanning Beds

High pressure tanning equipment got its name from the tanning lamp technology used. All true high pressure tanning systems utilize short-3 inch quartz lamps filled with mercury vapor that produce very high ultraviolet radiation (UVR) intensity levels. The pressure of the mercury vapor gas inside the tanning lamp is higher than that of a long tube lamp found in traditional tanning beds, thus the name "high-pressure" tanning was coined.

Low pressure tanning equipment got its name in much the same way. The difference is that the lamps used in low pressure tanning beds (identified by long tubes that run the full length of the tanning bed) have a negative atmospheric pressure or "vacuum". These tanning beds are all examples of low pressure tanning beds because they contain long tube style tanning lamps.

Both types of tanning beds can be highly effective at producing a tan but in recent years there has been some confusion between salon owners and tanners when it comes to high pressure. Some salon operators advertise having a high pressure bed when technically speaking, they do not. Others define high and low pressure beds by the amount of UVA and UVB the lamps put out. Based on this thinking, the higher the UVA, the more "high pressure" it is. This concept would allow long tube lamps that have a high UVA output to be classified as a high pressure and the small quartz lamps that output high UVB levels to become classified as low pressure. Again, this is not the case and it never has been.

Simply put, a tanning bed that uses any number of long tube lamps is not a true high pressure bed. High and low pressure is defined by the lamp type used and never by the UVA/UVB output of that lamp.

Most people need only 3 sessions in a high pressure bed to achieve a base tan.

High pressure tanning technology originated in Europe over 25 years ago. It has been available in the United States for a little over 15 years.

 Lotions & Moisturizors

x

Tanning Lotions with "Sizzle"  contain ingredients which increase blood  circulation to promote optimal tanning.  They cause a reddening & heating of the skin, the degree of which depends on what level of lotion you apply.

It's recommended that you use a lotion with a "Sizzle" only after you have established a good base tan and do not have sensitive skin.

The difference between "tingle" and "sizzle" correlates to what degree microcirculation is influenced.   A tingle factor is much less intense than a sizzle. A sizzle factor will increase your overall temperature and will result in much more blood to the surface of the skin and overall perspiration.

x

Tingle tanning lotions and sprays contain high concentrations of natural vitamins and botanical oils that stimulate the skin’s microcirculation by bringing blood closer to the surface of the skin. By stimulating the skin, the blood, along with melanin is forced to the surface. This can aid in the tanning process and may get you through your tanning plateau.

It is best to start with lower levels of "Tingle" in your tanning supplies. As you progress, working up to higher levels of Tingle tanning power.  As your body adjusts over several tanning sessions, you may gradually work to higher levels.

Tanning lotions have three basic functions: nutrition, hydration, and oxygenation.

Nutrition serves to supply the required vitamins to the skin cells to support regeneration and oxygenation.

Hydration is essential to moisturize the skin sufficiently.

Oxygenation helps provide oil to the skin and accelerates the tanning process.

x

An accelerator is a product that will boost the level of tanning cells in your skin. With the application of an accelerator when you shower in the morning, your skin will generate the tanning cells before you have your tanning session for the day. This will help you to tan almost immediately when you start the tanning process.

There are also amplifiers for tanning. This is a product that will create a moist barrier on your skin. This will trap rays that may have normally been reflected away. This will allow you to absorb as many tanning rays as you possibly can.

x

Tanning lotions contain antioxidants that can help remove fine lines and wrinkles, thus enabling the skin to look younger. They make use of natural plant extracts and vitamins A, C, and E. These lotions give a natural, radiant look, with smooth skin and a fresh feel.

There are tanning lotions for indoor tanning and outdoor tanning. You need to make sure that you are using the right lotion for the right needs.

Outdoor tanning lotions usually have some form of SPF to protect your skin from some of the harmful rays of the sun.

Indoor lotions do not have this and you may end up with a burning result if you use indoor lotions outside.

Using outdoor tanning lotions in a tanning bed may sound like a good idea if you have sensitive skin or burn easily, however the oils that they contain, especially the SPF's or "sun protection factors", have additional oils that can leave a residual film on the tanning bed retarding nearly all of the tanning benefits you seek.

If using an outdoor lotion or sunscreen, limit it to the bridge of your nose and cheek area of the face.
